However, to those in high up in the dance establishment, Dougherty was considered a real threat. His success validated an untrained (more likely unrehearsed) style. He was seen to be eroding the prestige of the art form, as now everyone thought they could be a dancer. He undermined the need for dance schools, discredited the years of training required to be considered a professional and, most importantly, he delegitimatised the positions of authority in the dance community. They did not like this.
